L98A2 Cadet GP Rifle (5.56mm)

Pam 5C – Rifle Lesson 3
(Load, Ready, Unload and Make Safe)
The above lesson directs that all drills must be carried out in the prone position; this has been found to be restrictive and not realistic when taking part in blank firing exercises. The lesson has now been changed to allow the cadet to conduct drills in any position depending on the ability of the cadet. It is recommended that where possible the prone position is still used; if this is not practicable then kneeling or sitting positions should be used.
ALL LIVE FIRING IS TO BE CONDUCTED FROM THE PRONE OR FIRE TRENCH POSITION.

Weapon cleaning

During a recent Equipment Care Inspection, it was noticed that some weapons were not being cleaned correctly. Rifle lesson 4, Pam 5-C covers the cleaning of the L98A2 Cadet GP. Para 01112, a–j, explains how the items of equipment in the maintenance kit should be used to clean effectively.
If weapons are used during a weekend training i.e. CADSAAM or Cadet Cambrian Patrol, then as soon after the event as possible the weapons should be cleaned.
What better time to teach a cadet how to clean a weapon when you have dirty weapons available?

Webbing

A directive has been received saying that all CFAV’s and cadets are to wear webbing during L98A2 SAA lessons, Live Firing Training and Battle Exercise. It is hoped that in the near future that the issues of cadet training vest will be increased to the scale of 1 vest per Cadet GP and DP rifle.
Range Action and Safety Plans
(RASP)
Exercise Action and Safety Plans
(EASP)

One of the aims of a RASP or EASP is to….

….. ‘Show that the Planning Officer/RCO has followed an acknowledged planning process, covering all aspects of safe training and as such it provides a clear audit trail.’
Infantry Training, Volume IV, Ranges, Pamphlet No. 21-C,
Regulations for Cadet Training with Cadet and
Infantry Weapon Systems and Pyrotechnics 2008

The practice of ‘cutting and pasting’ in the preparation of a RASP or EASP has been with us for some time – and if you have a good base document- it’s often a helpful and practical solution. Nobody is saying that it should be outlawed. What is important, however, is that is MUST be specific to the range, the specific practices or exercises to be conducted – and also to the cadets undergoing the training.
TOP TIP; make sure someone else ‘proof reads’ it thoroughly before it is published or submitted to the chain of command.
There has been  occasions when during blank firing field exercises cadets have been told to hold the working parts to the rear while a magazine is fitted, when withdrawing from enemy contact. This is a bad practice and not permitted and no attempt should be made to adopt this practice throughout Dyfed and Glamorgan ACF.
Cadets and CFAV may move with the L98A2 Cadet GP made ready provided the safety catch is applied.
