This is a competition for a selection of Detachments in Dyfed & Glamorgan ACF which will run from 1 October 2009-31 March 2010.

The competition is designed to find the Detachments that can save the most electricity for the six month period compared with consumption for the same period last year. The results will be notified at the end of the six month period.

Enclosed is a supply of posters etc and the Guidelines to the BIG SWITCH-OFF competition.

The Cadet Administrative Assistant (CAA) for your area should already be submitting monthly meter readings for your Detachment. These will be used to calculate the figures needed to compare with the same period’s consumption last year. You are welcome to email your monthly readings to me in addition to those readings – please send them to the email address at the foot of this page. You must include the name of the Detachment and the meter number.

I will send monthly updates to each detachment which will include a league table.

If your Detachment does not wish to enter the competition please notify me.

If you require any further information please email the address below.

Competition Guidelines

1. The competition will be run from 1 October 2009 until 31 March 2010.

2. Consumption will be compared with the same six months of 2008/2009, taking into account cadet numbers, and the Detachment with the highest percentage saving per capita will be the winner.

3. The following detachments are eligible to take part:

  Barry                         Beddau                         Clydach
  Burry Port                 Cardigan                      Carmarthen
  Cross Hands              Fishguard                     Garnant

  Fairwater                  Ferndale                       Llanishen
  Maesteg                    Morriston                     Mountain Ash
  Milford Haven           Newcastle Emlyn          Neyland
  Pembroke                 Pembroke Dock            St Clears

  Tenby                       Trimsaron                     Penarth
  Tonyrefail                 Townhill

4. Aim

The aim of the competition is to encourage fuel efficiency at cadet huts and submission of regular meter readings.

5. Objective

To achieve this aim monthly electricity meter readings will be collected over a six month period (October 09-March 10) and compared with the same period 08-09 on a detachment basis. The detachment with the best % reduction in fuel consumption will win a prize.

6. In order to be completely fair consideration will be given to the numbers of cadets parading at detachments. In order to do this consumption will be converted to tonnes of CO2 per cadet at each detachment.  The up to date cadet numbers will be gathered from Westminster monthly for the current year and directly from the County for the previous year. A league table will be produced each month and distributed throughout the detachments involved.

7. Winners

A total prize fund  of £2000 will be split between the best four detachments as follows:

1st prize - £1000
2nd prize - £500
3rd prize – two prizes of £250 each

The winning detachments will not receive the actual cash but an item (or items) that would be of benefit to the individual detachments. This item would be decided by the detachments following RFCA guidelines.

8. Ideas for Detachments

A senior cadet could be appointed ‘energy warden’. He/she could be responsible for meter readings and for ensuring that readings are sent to RFCA monthly, and maybe encourage others to switch off lights, close doors etc.

9. Website

A website solely for the competition is being created (see details below), this will eventually include a forum through which meter readings can be submitted etc and details of the league table and fuel saving ideas etc.
