Len’s military career started in November 1969 when he joined the TA with the 3 rd Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He then transferred to the Mercian Volunteers, remaining with them through many name changes until 2000 when he transferred to Glamorgan ACF. During this time he had worked his way through the ranks gaining his commission in 1984. His initial appointment with Glamorgan ACF was as OC D Company, based in Merthyr Tydfil and was promoted to Lt Col on becoming appointed Deputy Commandant in 2005.
He was very proud of his time with the Mercian's; so much so that he adopted Field Marshall Montgomery’s habit of wearing two cap badges. The only difference being that Len wore his Mercian cap badge inside his beret.
Although a Brummie by birth he never lost his love for mid Wales after working in Aberystwyth in the 1970s. As soon as he could, he moved back to live and work in Wales, finally settling in Tregaron where he remained until his untimely death from cancer at the age of 65.
His considerable military service and dedication was recognised by the award of the MBE in 1992 and the TD in 1995. Along with his considerable expertise, he also brought with him a wealth of experience in Health and Safety and First Aid, all of which he freely offered in his typical enthusiastic and generous manner. He could always be found at First Aid competitions across the country, alongside his wife Bron, sharing that same enthusiasm , with fellow instructors and cadets alike.
He transferred to Gwent and Powys ACF in 2009 where he also made a considerable impact, training adults and cadets in their new county structure. His untimely death, following on so recently after that of his beloved wife Bron has been a shock to everyone. He will be sadly missed by us all.
